In Scotland the so-called ‘Staffordshire’ Dog has always been known as the ‘Wally Dug/dog’, ‘wally’ being Central Scottish dialect for ‘made of china’ (Collins Dictionary of the English Language, 1986). Scottish ‘Wally Dugs’ were produced at the Bo’ness Pottery in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. At one time many homes had a pair of ‘wally dugs’ on the mantelpiece above the fire. Whether you are Scottish or have Scottish ancestry or connections you may well recall or remember being told of Mother's, Granny's or Great Auntie Maggie's Wally Dugs. Now they are back, because Griselda Hill has linked two much loved Scottish traditions, Wemyss Ware® designs and Wally dugs to produce these amazing pieces which are sure to become highly collectable items of living history.
